A keycap is the part your finger meets.
Archisite defines a keycap as the cap fitted to a keyboard switch and touched while typing. Colour and character make it visible; size, height, shape, layout, and switch compatibility decide whether it belongs on a particular board.

01 · Understand
One visible part of a larger mechanism.
A keycap is not the whole key switch and not the keyboard beneath it. Archisite organises the part through colour, shape, material, and printed or moulded legends. It names PBT and ABS as common materials for mechanical-keyboard caps while also noting that other materials exist.
02 · Read the fit
Compatibility comes before decoration.
Check the switch mount, key position, width, height, profile, and keyboard layout. Archisite warns that profile names are not governed by one universal standard and may vary by maker or factory. “Mechanical keycap” or “MX-style” is not enough evidence for every keyboard.
