A sticky note is more than a small sheet of paper.
In 3M’s account of Post-it development, a lightly adhering, removable adhesive met a practical bookmark problem and became a note that could stay on the page. The adhesive—not the paper size—is the useful boundary.

A note designed to attach and come away.
3M describes Spencer Silver’s adhesive as one that could stick lightly and remain removable. Art Fry then applied that property to a bookmark that needed to stay in place without damaging the page, before recognising its use as a memo note. This is the history of the Post-it brand; it does not make every Japanese fusen a Post-it product.
02 · Read the kind
Separate the kind from the illustration.
A loose memo sheet has no attached adhesive. A sticky note does. Beyond that boundary, formats can differ: a maker may offer a writing note, a narrow page marker, or a larger adhesive area. Read the maker’s own name and specification instead of deciding from shape alone.
